The project is designed to make an increasingly elderly population aware of common packaging accidents and injuries in order to reduce the number of accidents that occur annually. This follows on from an EPSRC grant (RA99037), which successfully researched some of the most common scenarios of packaging accidents and injuries.
The cost to the UK of such accidents is huge: the DTI have published findings indicating that the National Health Service spends approximately 12 million each year on injuries related to opening packaging, with over 70,000 people attending Accident and Emergency departments. However, the enormous costs in terms of quality of life cannot be underestimated.
